156 new beds for Midwest hospitals by 2028 with 48 earmarked for Ennis

–                  156 new beds will be put in place across three hospitals from 2025-28

–                  Additional 42 in St John’s in Limerick between 2029-31

Clare Fianna Fáil TD Cathal Crowe has welcomed confirmation that an additional 156 acute in-patient beds will be in place in Midwest hospitals by 2028 – crucially, with 48 of those situated in Ennis General Hospital.

University Hospital Limerick is set to receive an additional 84 beds in this timeframe, with 24 going to Nenagh Hospital – while further down the line, 42 beds are ringfenced for St John’s Hospital in Limerick between 2029 and 2031.

“This is hugely welcome news – particularly the fact that we now have confirmation that 48 of these beds will be put in place in Ennis General,” said Deputy Crowe.

“Ennis has a crucial role to play in helping to alleviate overcrowding in UHL – a point I have vociferously made to my colleagues, including Minister Stephen Donnelly, and the only way it can do this is by having additional capacity and an expanded scope of services.

“Today’s announcement follows two recent meetings held between myself, Friends of Ennis General Hospital and Minister Donnelly where we highlighted these very needs to him.

“I have long been outspoken in my belief that the political decision to downgrade the A&E in Ennis back in 2009, leaving only one Model 3 hospital in the Midwest, was a retrograde step that never resulted in us getting this promised ‘centre of excellence’.

“I hope that we continue to see capacity increased at our hospitals so that we can ensure that some reparations are made to help with the situation we currently find ourselves in.

“Today’s announcement isn’t happening overnight – the 156 beds committed by 2028 will start to be rolled out by March of next year, while the 42 for St John’s will commence in 2029 and be in place by 2031 – but it’s definitely a step in the right direction.

“I’ll be pushing the Health Minister to prioritise these beds over the ones promised to other CHOs in the country, given the specific difficulties faced in our region.”

€1.2 million in funding confirmed towards delivery of affordable housing in Ennis

–                  Two projects in county town to proceed

–                  Prices will begin from approx. 20% below market value

Clare Fianna Fáil TD Cathal Crowe has welcomed the announcement of a total €1.2 million in funding for delivery of two affordable housing schemes in Ennis.

A sum of €550,000 will be granted towards the delivery of 11 affordable purchase homes at Acha Bhile, Lahinch Road, Ennis, while €650,000 has been awarded to the delivery of 10 affordable purchase homes at Doire na mBláth, Tulla Road, Ennis.

“This is great news for prospective homeowners in Ennis and surrounding areas,” said Deputy Crowe.

“The numbers may be small – but 21 affordable homes coming to a town of Ennis’ size is a step in the right direction.

“The Ache Bhile homes are expected to be delivered in Q4 of this year, and will be sold at rates beginning from €284,000 which is a 20% discount on local market rates; while the Tulla Road homes are to be delivered in Q2 2025 will be sold from €280,000 representing a 22% discount on local market rates.

“I’m pleased to see this announcement today and am confident that Minister Darragh O’Brien will continue to deliver for Clare.

“It’s essential that affordable housing is expanded and rolled out more widely, to ensure that those who are on the cusp of having a foot on the property ladder can secure a home of their own.

“I hope to see further positive announcements in this regard for our county in the near future.”

Recruitment underway for senior dental posts to alleviate chronic waiting times in Midwest

–                  Two dental surgeons to be hired with a third on the way

–                  Serious consideration needed for A&E

Clare Fianna Fáil TD Cathal Crowe has welcomed confirmation that three senior dental posts will be filled in the Midwest region to help alleviate the chronic waiting lists currently being experienced.

The HSE has confirmed to Deputy Crowe that recruitment is already underway for two surgeons.

“This is finally some positive news for dental care in our region,” said Deputy Crowe.

“As many parents can attest, waiting times to have children seen by public dentists in Clare is chronic.

“I’ve long championed this issue behind the scenes and, more publicly, in the Dáil Chamber so I’m delighted to receive confirmation that one general dental surgeon and one senior dental surgeon (special needs) are currently being recruited.

“The vacant posts in terms of dental surgeons in the CHO3 area exceed this – and 2.2 whole time equivalent general dental surgeons are needed, which was highlighted prior to the HSE’s recruitment embargo.

“While just one general dental surgeon is now being hired, approval is also underway for the remaining 1.2 whole time equivalent roles so this will seriously meet the shortfall.

“In addition, this will require dental nurse hires.

“It’s important to note that this recruitment is being exempt from the current embargo – this is essential to meet the needs of this region.

“I’m contacted regularly not only about this but also the need for dentists to accept medical card patients – I’ll continue raising this behind closed doors too.

“In the meantime, I’m glad to see these hires ongoing and hope that wait times for dentists will drop significantly as a result.”
